Mohammad Jakaria

Welcome!
I am a Ph.D. Candidate in Economics at the University of South Carolina. My research lies in development, labor, and environmental economics, with a particular focus on how digital technology, financial access, and climate change shape economic and social well-being in developing countries. I use quasi-experimental methods and high-resolution geospatial and household survey data to generate policy-relevant evidence.

Alongside my research, I care deeply about teaching and helping students think clearly about real-world problems using economic reasoning. I use active learning to connect economic models to policy issues and explain complex ideas in simple ways. I aim to create a classroom where all students feel welcome, supported, and confident. 

I am on the 2026–27 academic job market, and I will complete my Ph.D. in December 2026. My job market paper, “3G Internet and Women’s Empowerment in Sub-Saharan Africa,” was presented at ASSA 2026. This fall, I am teaching Introduction to Economics (ECON 224) and Introduction to Mathematical Economics (ECON 523) at the University of South Carolina.
